题目:Signal Processing: from particles to genes and brains

Outline:

Professor Asoke Nandi has recently moved from his post as the David Jardine Professor of Signal Processing at Liverpool to be Head of Electronic and Computer Engineering at Brunel. His research interests are founded on analyzing, modelling, and deciphering signals from a wide variety of scientific and engineering processes, in order to extract information. He first worked as a post-doc in the UA1 team at CERN that discovered the W and Z Bosons, which earned the recognition of the 1984 Nobel Committee for Physics. Since them he has been developing and applying a series of novel methods and algorithms to a wide variety of problems in physics and electronics, and most recently in biology and cognitive neuroscience. These span the full range of detection, classification, estimation, and prediction.

In this lecture Professor Nandi will begin with glimpses of some of his earlier works and then highlight his work on communications, biomedical signal processing, as well as describe his recent work in biology and neuropsychology. Some examples are his developmentof algorithms to separate maternal and foetal ECGs (cardiac signals),his work on a range of medical signals, including breast cancer detection from mammographic images, and his work on analysis of signals (EEG and fMRI) from the brain. He has recently developed and applied new techniques for tuneable clustering of complex biological data, including comparative and time-series transcriptome data from single or multiple sources.

Much of his research can be defined as gaining information and understanding from data. More generally, he will suggest how new mathematical methods (signal processing and machine learning) can help understand the large data sets we currently acquire in biological studies.

Professor Asoke K. Nandireceived the degree of Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge (Trinity College), Cambridge (UK). He held academic positions in several universities, including Oxford (UK), Imperial College London (UK), Strathclyde (UK), and Liverpool (UK). In 2013 he moved to Brunel University (UK), to theChair and Head of Electronic and Computer Engineering.Professor Nandi is a Finland Distinguished Professor at the University of Jyvaskyla (Finland), and an Adjunct Professor at University of Calgary (Canada).

In 1983 Professor Nandicontributed to the discovery of the three fundamental particles known as W+, W−and Z0 (bythe UA1 team at CERN), providing the evidence for the unification of the electromagnetic and weak forces, which was recognized by the Nobel Committee for Physics in 1984. His current research interests lie in the areas of signal processing and machine learning, with applications to communications, gene expression data, functional magnetic resonance data, and biomedical data.
